  1. hey vartika,

    thanks for this!!

looking fwd to some awesome entries to the contest!!!

  2. Everyone witnesses that moment in their life, where one decision changes everything. Where we know that right then and there, wand that we are re-defining ourselves. These are our daring moments. I remember one such moment in my life which i can credit to be a leap frog moment. I was always passionate about computers and way back in 5th std, my parents enrolled me to DOS class on my demand paying 500/-. The class was full of students of standard 8th and above. As the classes began, it found it harder to me to learn with the super pace at which the students of higher standard were learning as they were aware of most of the basics in computers while i was a newbie. I kept trying but couldn’t match the pace at which the sir taught and the students learnt. As a result, was sent home with a long-letter explaining my parents how i couldn’t learn and grasp things in DOS and that i was too young for this course. And would never learn DOS until i am in 8th. Probably if the sir would have helped me to understand under special treatment, i could have done better as i was just a 5th std kid. But this incident din’t let me down. I used to save my parent’s given pocket money to me to goto cyber cafe and spend hours on learning DOS myself. With no guide besides internet sites, i learnt DOS within 6 months. While other students learnt just DOS, i went on to learn by-myself a lot into DOS including writing programs, hacks and many more. Well as they say, “Risk toh spiderman ko bhi lena padta hein“.

Why is this a leap frog moment in my life is it thought me two important lessons which even today helps in my entrepreneurial journey:

    1. Believe in challenging every limit that is put upon us.

    2. Act on your heart or listen to fear.

  3. Probably for every startup, the leapfrog moment would be when they leave their job & start working on their idea.

Well the leapfrog moment for me was when I left my job without telling anyone in my family (when according to them it was the best job & that too in my hometown) . I was just not sure what would I be doing after leaving the job but what I truly knew was that I was not feeling motivated enough to continue the job I was doing. I wanted to do something of my own but wasn’t sure how to start with it. So I was literally caught in a trap.

I just believed in myself & took a leap of faith by resigning one fine day as I thought the best way to figure things out is to stop doing what I am no more liking. I left my job & did freelancing for one year. During that one year I learned at my own pace & earned too & figured out the gaps that exist in the market. After 1 yr of freelancing, I started my own venture named as CrispTalks.com that now serves 100+ startups (started in Dec 2014) with affordable animated videos.

  4. I don’t know how to define a Leapfrog moment. This term has different meaning in different individual’s life. If we generalise, it is a life changing moment for an individual.

Strangely, I have two Leapfrog moments in my life. The first Leap I took was from innocence of childhood to the world of Competition in Education. And the second is from Education to Entrepreneurship.
After the death of my father at the age of 12, I was determined in my heart to make my mother proud for the care and support she consistently strives to provide me even today. I took education as my weapon and succeeded to land up in IIT Kharagpur last year.

But soon I felt that my achievements were not enough to stand out in the crowd of exceptionally talented students of India. Fighting the never ending competition among the students was tiring for me. All of a sudden, around February 2015, I decided to do my first internship in a Campus based Startup Company. To my surprise, I found the work quite interesting and simple as compared to the everyday rat race behind getting 0.5 marks from every exam and assignment.

So, now I knew what I wanted to become but didn’t know how to start. And just like dreaming of some special dish and getting the same in your lunch from your mother, I came across my mentor. With his help and few more of his interns we kick-started our first Startup named “CrateWorld”. It was strange for me to know how simple actually it was to become successful in the world of Entrepreneurship for me. I made the first post on”The Rodinhoods” itself declaring the launch of CrateWorld in July 2015 and now the two month old StartUp does extremely well beyond everyone’s expectation. Today at the age of 19, I am proud to state myself as the Co-Founder of CrateWorld.

“Dream is not that you see while sleeping, it is something that does not let you sleep” – Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

  5. Risk of risk not taken!

My leapfrog moment was realizing, that the greatest risk in the world is to not take any risk at all. Whether its not taking the risk to propose the love of your life or not leaving that cushy Investment Banking job for the dream company that you wanted to build, you have to take the jump. If you don’t take any risk, you will never know what you could have done in life.

  6. To me, Leap frog moments always occur in hindsight, and there are in-numerable small things that create the situation for that ‘jump’. Being a medical student and dreaming of doing a scalable, disruptive business at the same time was totally unorthodox, and I had innumerable naysayers. I kept on cultivating that dream, till one day I decided to give the state MBA CET, with just 2-3 weeks to prepare.

Fortunately, I got good enough results to convince folks in my Family to let me try, and got into IIM Ahmedabad the next year. Eight years later and I never regret that decision. Juggling with multiple things at a time, struggling with finances yet, but I am enjoying the roller coaster ride that is Entrepreneurship and patiently building for the next jump!

P.S.- I am working on multiple things in Stealth mode as of now, while juggling a brick and mortar vaccines distributorship. I have made a product iVaccinate to digitize and improve doctor’s vaccination practices. It is a lot of struggle to get feedback and iterate on the product, doctors are a tough nut to crack…

  7. Imagine you have a billion dollar dream. Everyone around you has high hopes from you. And there you go, you start your startup. An edu-startup focusing on skill development.

You start recording videos in a hope that you will be guiding light for millions. After 50 retakes you create a video and you receive this feedback:

My lil’ Sister, Brother had a great laugh that day. I didn’t foresee that happening and it was very, inspiring and motivating to me.

Absolutely clueless about what to do next, I practiced harder, I watched videos of inspiring leaders who preached “how great the failures are”. After over 1500 retakes, I recorded over 220 videos to Skill the fellow humans.

So many loved them. And here is what they said:

I was delighted to see how beautifully the community I built guarded me from the viewer who didn’t understand my “Indian accent”.

I had ( and will always have ) faith in me and BeingSkilled eventually grew from having 0 subscribers – 0 views to 652 subscribers – 98,500 views ( micro e-lectures delivered ).

World is becoming skilled through 1 e-lecture at a time.

That was my leapfrog moment in my entrepreneurial journey.

  8. My Leapfrog Moment

Thanks Rodinhoods for such an amazing contest. The leapfrog moments shared by others are really inspiring.

The moment I heard of this contest, I knew my leapfrog moment.

I had a 2 years of work experience post my studies in Delhi and I had decided to move back to jaipur with a job in hand to stay with my family. It was only three months that my now partner called me to ask if we could together open an agency based on an offer that he had received from one client. One of his friends who was a designer was also one of the partners. I had no clue about running an agency or being an entrepreneur. At that point of time, it wasn’t a fancy word. It was something your family would never allow you to get in to. But the idea of continuing to write any more brochures or ads in my current job didn’t excite me much.

    I LITERALLY LEAPFROGGED.

I went ahead with the decision to move back to Delhi, with nothing on my table to show and a still-to-finalize rented place which made me stay at one of my friend’s place for a few days before I had a place to stay and work from.

We were asked to create banners, mailers, around 300 Digital Impressions a month, blogs and many related things. Within first few days, our designer got another job opportunity and he quit. So a design agency was left with 2 founders who were copywriters. Those were some of the darkest days when I would continuously get calls from my mom to come back and I had to choose between being back to a normal life or continuing to struggle with freelancers to whom we had no money to give and pitching for new clients with little knowledge of how is it actually done. We asked money from our known people and for the next few months, we worked to pay them back in any form. We soon realized that it’s time to take a decision, a lasting one.

    We LEAPFROGGED.

We sat and realized why not use our copywriting skills and cater to big agencies as their copy partners. That was the only way out to keep ‘nailbites’ alive. And in one month, we got 2-3 projects that kept the ship sailing. Even today, we continue to serve those agencies as copy partners at very minimal rates as it was they who believed and helped us think about continuing.

For next 5 years, We saw it all. Working on projects endlessly, pitching day and night, hiring but not firing at the right time, employees leaving at the middle of a life-saving project and the continuous dilemma of where will all this lead. We also saw some glorious days that played a significant role in keeping our faith intact. We met amazing people, amongst which Rodinhooders were the ones who created such amazing positivity around. And in no time, we grew in terms of team and projects, but still something awesome was missing.

    We LEAPFROGGED.

We decided to dissolve the agency of 12 people and give all of this a real thinking. My partner joined a 3 months projects and those 3 months were like the most desperate ones where everyday I would either prepare a resume and look for opportunities in other startups or work on my long awaited product business idea. But I had little clue. The most amazing part of these 3 months were my family’s support who really wanted me to do something of my own. I had won their hearts. I got a couple of offers which were really exciting, but not enough to subdue my Product Idea.

    I LEAPFROGGED.

I convinced my now partner to give this a shot. But this was some real game with need for investment unlike our earlier venture. My savings which I had been doing for a four-wheeler since 5 years (yeah, we were that bad at savings) were all utilized to start the product venture, which now I proudly present as UTPATANG.

I have been leapfrogging every single day since then. But now I have realized that everyday brings to you a Leapfrog moment. Every new decision you make is one such moment and if you don’t go ahead with it, you will miss what’s ahead. And now I strongly believe in the saying that, “THE DAY YOU QUIT IS THE DAY BEFORE YOU SUCCEED.” So Never Quit & Keep taking that leap!

  9. My Leapfrog Moment or How I rolled up my sleeves and got down to work

It all started last year when I was asked to create a particular solution for the intelligence branch of our state police. At the time, my company strength was around 60 personnel comprising 40 developers with various skill-sets. However, I found that I could not get the work executed as everyone was busy with our regular projects. This inability to work with the enquiring department went on for two months till I realised that I had to get it done somehow. However, outsourcing was not an option because of the sensitive nature of the operations. Hence, in one epiphanic moment while driving back from the department office, I decided I would create the solution myself a. k. a. as “My leapfrog moment a.k.a. “How I rolled up my sleeves and got down to work”.

From then on, I started working nights as a coder while I undertook my regular works during the day. As my business involves frequent travelling, I still ensured that I would code in the night in the hotel room. This was important as I handle sales and I am literally always out of the office. However, this ability to sit and write code anywhere has come in very handy for me now as I will explain later.

Finally, after 3 months of working at night (and learning as I had to teach myself from scratch) I ended up with a complete solution which is now being used by our state police. When I got my cheque for a few lakhs it was a joyous moment for me. Though the amount may not be much, it was fantastic to receive this amount as I knew that it was completely due to me and my efforts. I am also happy to inform that I have further enquiries from 9 other states at present and will be exhibiting this solution to the international law enforcement community in March 2016.

The end results of this whole exercise were –

    1. I became an all-rounder in software development also known as a Full-Stack developer. Now, I am working on a new solution for delivery technology which I will be launching this month. For this solution, I am taking care of everything right from UI design to Database to the actual coding and testing.

    2. I enhanced my ability to do mental work in the oddest of conditions. For example, my current solution I am writing while sitting in metal workshops!

    3. I started loving doing things myself instead of delegating them. This led me to start inventing.

    4. My first invention was the Lifeboat ((The Lifeboat on The Rodinhoods)) and now I have invented the Vajram, the world’s first all-metal padlock with integrated GPS and GSM/GPRS alerting. I am exhibiting the Vajram since yesterday at the India Gadget Expo 2015 and getting fantastic response. In fact, last night I was on the news on 2 different channels simultaneously and I have been giving TV interviews since morning. 🙂

    (Will post youtube links soon).

So, my desire to satisfy the client’s requirements resulted in a leapfrog moment to use my own mind to invent. 🙂 Now, it’s been an amazing journey so far as I am learning something new every moment and using the newly acquired knowledge.

In fact, I would say that the journey has just begun and I intend to churn out new commercially viable inventions and solutions on a continuous basis.

  10. My leapfrog moment as an entrepreneur is the day I really started believing that what we are doing at Pratilipi really needs to be done.

A couple of months after we had started Pratilipi, and were wondering how do grow from here or whether we are really doing the right thing, we received this message from one of our readers.

“I was worried that my four year old daughter doesn’t know anything about her native language or culture. Thanks to Pratilipi, I now read her a story/poem every night and we both love it.”

We still had no clue on how to grow Pratilipi, but we were 100% sure that we were on the right thing. This really needs to be done, and till the time we believe that we are the best people to do this, we will do this.

That experience and the vote of confidence was so strong that even now whenever I -or another team member- have any doubts, we look at this picture for 10 seconds and we start believing again 🙂

  11. wow. these are amazing leapfrog moments shared by all of you! may the best one win!
